NAPOLEON AND KING MURAT
the readings of George Custer

Cavalry Leader Marshal Murat

Murat was born the son of an innkeeper who, after five years service in the ranks, was commissioned in the French cavalry in 1792. He won renown as one of Napoleon’s foremost cavalry commanders and went on to marry Napoleon’s sister, Caroline. In 1804 he was promoted Marshal of France, and in 1808 he became King Joachim of Naples. Murat was a brilliant if typically reckless cavalry commander, but as an administrator he was hopelessly incompetent. Eventually he lost his kingdom to the Bourbons and was executed by firing squad.
